From December 27, 2021 until January 7, 2022 Barbara Kosen and her Sangha will be meeting in Shorin-ji for the traditional Winter Camp, the end-of-year retreat.
Monday, December 27 during the evening: Arrival. Opening dinner around 9:00 pm.
Tuesday 28: We get ready for the sesshin starting zazen at an almost intensive pace.
Wednesday 29, thursday 30: Sesshin –intensive zazen– until past midnight.
Friday 31: Rest, breakfast, and samu to arrange for the passage. New Year’s Eve festive dinner at 9:30 p.m. Approaching 00:00 hours and all assembled next to the glow of a bonfire, there comes the 108 Bonno ceremony, where everyone present participates striking the temple bell up to a total of 108 times, which means leaving behind the 108 types of passions that bind human beings. Reinvigorated, next we celebrate. The inevitable party and music … but remembering that the next day we will sit again in zazen!
Saturday, January 1: Frugal breakfast, first zazen of the year and Fuse (giving) ceremony . Each participant offers, according to his possibilities, a donation to the temple, burning incense on the altar of Buddha. At lunch time everybody get together again to enjoy a New Year’s meal.
Then it is resting time until January 2 in the afternoon, and subsequently the practice continues until January 7, with zazen at sunrise and sunset of each day, and also with samu, a practice that expresses the unity of body and mind of zazen in the actions of the daily life of the temple. A life full of vigor and harmony.
Although no previous experience is necessary, some effort and determination are required to participate, especially during the sesshin, when Zazen become strenuous. The decision not to be guided by your individual ego and opening up to the experience of the Buddha’s Awakening will be key. He taught zazen thousands of years ago and his heirs and pupils, teachers such as Barbara Kosen, have continued to protect and transmit shikantaza, accepting every person who sincerely wishes to practice.
