NEW YEAR IN THE SANGHA
Dear friends,
From the Barbara Kosen Zen Sangha, we begin the year with a commitment: that 2026 be a cycle in which we delve deeper into the awakened nature that dwells within us. Sometimes a single moment is enough to realize that true freedom lies in becoming aware of who we are, allowing our daily actions to reflect this intimacy with ourselves.
Through our continuous practice, we want to contribute to the creation of a collective dwelling in which to transform suffering. For this, it is urgent that we change our perspective, that we cultivate compassion, presence, and vulnerability where our conditioning would sow greed, ignorance, or aversion. Our karma is no different from the karma of humanity, and we believe that sitting each day in the zazen mirror is a movement that generates a positive influence on the entirety of the cosmos.
As a sangha, we journey together and also alone. Every year-end, we practice intensively until the early hours of the morning, guided by the starlight and the teachings of our teacher. On the 31st, we light a large fire and ring the bell 108 times, representing the Bonno, or unlimited passions. The following day, we collect the ashes from the bonfire, which we will use for incense burners throughout the new year. In between, we celebrate the privilege of receiving a method to reconnect with our natural state as human beings.
Being aware of the complexity of the times we live in, we wish you that this year you find moments where you are guided by your own inner silence.
