Master Barbara Kosen will gather with her Sangha for the traditional Winter Camp in Shorin-ji, a retreat taking place from December 27 to January 7.
Wednesday Dec. 27 in the evening: Arrivals and welcome dinner around 21:00.
Thursday 28: Preparation for the Sesshin; practice of zazen at a quite intensive pace from the beginning.
Friday 29 – Saturday 30: Sesshin; intensive zazen, the rhythm will grow progressively –as well as the moon– well beyond Saturday’s midnight.
Sunday 31: Rest, breakfast and samu. New Year’s Eve festive dinner at 21:30. Close to 0:00 hours and by the glare of a bonfire the ceremony of the 108 bonnos will start. Erveryone present will participate in the tolling of the temple bell, warding off the 108 types of passions that bind human beings to their karmic constraints. Meanwhile a queimada will be prepared, ancestral beverage -with enchantment included- just in order to keep shedding off bad feelings and other sneaking creatures and enter the new year as happy as newborn babies. And the party will go on for all the nocturnal birds in the wood’s small community.
Monday Jan. 1: After breakfast, first zazen of the year and fuse ceremony, which means giving. Each participant offers with all its heart a donation to the temple while incense is burned on the Buddha’s altar. Afterwards, a special meal for prosperity in the year to come and many good wishes.
Following, a well-deserved and necessary rest.
On Jan. 2 practice will be resumed. Until Jan. 7, Zazen at dawn, samu, zazen at dusk. The contentment of a simple and harmonious life.
The Three Wise Men coming from the East? Maybe but, above all, the King of Ku spoken of in the poems of Daishi.
Deep is the Way, the teachings hidden in Zazen. The way of the bird. The practice that reaches out to everyone.
