Shakyamuni realized awakening as the morning star rose in the sky. He was together with all beings, there was no separation. His quest was completed and the whole cosmos was aware. This deed has reached us thanks to the determination of all persons who followed his Teachings and treaded the Way, beyond themselves, in order to help human beings to strive towards enlightenment, to realize their Buddha nature. It is not the case of a special state induced by the consumption of a substance, nor that of a mystical illumination. It is in this very reality, conducting a life rooted in deep practice, where we can retrieve the normal condition as human beings. Condition normally hidden by agitation and noise, which appears when we establish a silence so much neglected.
The posture in which Shakyamuni Buddha attained Enlightenment, motionless and silent, that is Zazen. This posture is a veritable treasure transmitted with precision and accuracy. It is not kept anywhere in particular, but is manifested as bright as a full moon when taught by a true Master.
These few days of Sesshin are not only a remembrance of the Buddha’s awakening, but also an expression of gratitude and an intimate renewal of our determination to sitting practice. Not precisely dumbly resting on a cushion, but applying our full consciousness towards the inner revolution that the immobility of zazen brings about.
The conductor will be Sensei Barbara Kosen, who lives and teaches like the Patriarchs of the Transmission of the Lamp. It is good to seize this opportunity to receive her teachings.
In the teaching of Zazen the thunder is I, the drop of water splashing the wall is I, there isn’t any thinking that separate us from reality. Separation comes from fear, from selfishness, from pride, from ignorance, from wanting to make profit. An old sage and ancient Master said: “The sage does not have an ego, everything become his ego”. Hishiryo: Beyond thinking, beyond separation “I – the rest”. Beyond inner and outer. Unity.
